Transition?

So I just found out that there's this thing called transition. All the mamas out there already know, apparently, but I had never even heard of it! So when you're having the baby, it goes labor, transition, birth. My friend described it as feeling like she was going to throw up. And she was worried that that would last the next couple of hours ('cause she had already been in labor for a little while), but that is how you know you're almost done! It has to get worse before it gets better. Oy vey!

Woohoo!

I made it through the night without getting up to pee! Also, I'm dehydrated. But it was so nice while it lasted...

Pregnancy Paranoia

When you're pregnant, so many things can go wrong. The smallest fender bender can hurt your baby, a simple trip and fall and you could lose what you've done so much to protect. My mind is crazy! Every single day, I drive to work and I think, "this could be it." I imagine car accidents at every corner, I imagine getting hit every time I walk across the street. I know it's crazy and I wish I could quit it! I am finally getting that first glimpse at real mama bear instincts. I get angry when people are careless and I scream at other drivers (though that's not really new). I am so excited just to get to the point in the pregnancy where if something happened to me, they might still be able to save the baby. If I were to go into early labor for some reason, I want to be at the point where there is hope.

So to add to all of that, here's a really sad story to remind you just because the baby is born, it doesn't mean you can relax. You never know what's coming!

Oh, and it's also a reminder to thank your doctors. I imagine most people don't get thanked because like the woman in the video, they don't really get to see their patients again. So when someone makes a difference, remember to thank them. And hold your loved ones near and dear!

Food Poisoning and Pregnancy

It is a new tradition that I get food poisoning on my birthday. Last year I was flying back to Hawaii after state wrestling in Oregon and I got sick on the plane. It was probably the most uncomfortable, awful experience of my life. This year, I had already flown home (thank. The. Heavens), but I have a tiny, defenseless human growing inside me and counting on me to take care of her! So I was extra emotional throughout all of my puking (and I'm already an emotional puker - I would usually rather die than throw up).

So I called my doctor, and this is what you need to know about food poisoning while pregnant:
If you have a fever and food poisoning, there's a chance you have a bacteria called lysteria in you, and this can cause a miscarriage. You need to go to the hospital immediately.
If you can't keep down fluids, you are going to get dehydrated (same as non-pregnant food poisoning haha). My doctor gave me the phone number for Labor and Delivery and said to call them if I couldn't keep down fluids because they'll want to hook me up to an IV and run some tests for Baby.
If you aren't sure if you're having stomach cramps or contractions, just pay attention to how often you have them. If it happens more than 4 times an hour, you need to call Labor and Delivery and get to the hospital. Lysteria can cause early labor.

Soooo yeah. Other than those 3 things, just stay calm and try not to cry too much - that will only dehydrate you faster!
